Chris Parks, together with his father Peter, has been at the forefront of some of the most innovative filmmaking of the last 30 years. Their haul of awards, including Peter's Oscar and Chris's nine awards from Hollywood's AIS , are a testament to their expertise in using technology and technological solutions to tell stories. Whether for some of the film industry's biggest feature films or in filming some of the smallest creatures in our oceans, Chris has always set out to excite, illuminate and captivate his audiences.
Throughout his career, Chris has been driven largely by a love of his subjects and his work has been an outlet for his curiosity. It was this desire that led Chris to develop both hardware for capturing 3D and the techniques for telling stories and documenting subjects in 3D.
Chris, together with his father Peter, has spent a lot of his time building hardware to enable them to capture their subjects. They have invented numerous optical solutions, rigs and stabilisation systems. It is this inventiveness which led directly to them being awarded technical Oscars on two separate occasions and to Peter winning the Gordon E. Sawyer lifetime achievement Oscar for his contribution to the film industry.
While engineering and computer solutions have often been necessary to capture the images that Chris has been looking for, the driving force has always been the story. Whether that is developing ways to use stereo 3D to enhance the narrative or building camera systems to capture new views of old subjects, it has always been story that has driven the creation of the technology.
All the technology and storytelling that Chris harnesses for his projects is focussed on communicating his subjects to his audience. It is also his love of communicating that drives his art, whether photographing stories from the natural world or creating his fluid paintings to illustrate and communicate abstract and impossible to film subjects.
Invisible Oceans is a very personal project for Chris, but over the years he has been supported by dozens of producers, technicians, engineers, scientists and other filmmakers.
The work that is showcased in the Invisible Oceans Founder's Collection is the foundation of all the work that followed. Whether creating galactic events for science fiction films, supervising the stereo 3D on Studio Features or developing VR experiences that would be featured in the Smithsonian AMNH in Washington, the inspiration and technology that made it all possible was first developed to create the images that you see here. If you want to see a bit more of what came from that, and what will provide the material for future NFT collections and the utility that these collections will hold, then you can see more of Peter and Chris's work in these sites.
